For years, SUVs have moved family cars, minivans, and even compact and saloon cars as the first choice for the family, as they have become the most versatile option.

And with the remarkable growth of the hybrid and electric supply, the segment is also at the forefront of sustainable mobility technology and trends, so brands do not intend to reduce their stake and prepare numerous novelties by 2021.

What is an SUV?

But before we delve into the novelties that the market is preparing for next year, let’s briefly define what an SUV is, although we doubt very much that you don’t know yet, dear reader.

The term “SUV” comes from the English Sport Utility Vehicle and is used in cars that combine elements typical of an SUV and conventional tourism. Today they are the most fashionable type of vehicle on the market and range from segment A to F with sales shares higher than those of traditional niches as mentioned above.

We are talking about the so-called all-way or “Crossover”, which in recent years has burst into the market with great force. This type of vehicle is based on platforms of other models and has a free height to the upper ground, allowing them to acquire some ability to ride off the asphalt, although without reaching the off-road qualities of off-road vehicles. In reality, SUVs do not form a segment of their own, and depending on their size, they can belong to B, C, D, etc.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio facelift

The Stelvio was Alfa Romeo’s first SUV and was launched in 2016. This is a D-segment vehicle whose mechanics range from 160 to 280 HP and is currently offered with combined petrol or diesel engines with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. The star of the range is the Quadrifoglio version, which provides 510 HP of power and reaches 100 km/h from standing in just 3.6 seconds.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio will undergo major changes, with its presentation scheduled for the end of 2021. Aesthetics will be reviewed and more efficient mechanics will be implemented, with even a plug-in hybrid version on the table. In any event, the recent merger between FCA and PSA could result in certain changes as a result of a review of the trading strategy for Alfa Romeo.

Alfa Romeo Tonale

This second SUV of the Italian brand has as its mission to offer a more affordable alternative than the Stelvio for a market that currently carries much of sales in Europe.

Thus, we could define Tonale as Stelvio’s little brother and Giulietta’s relay for segment C. Its presentation is scheduled for the second half of 2021 and the plan has been altered following the merger of FCA with PSA to lead to the alliance called Stellaris.

As a result, the Tonale will receive the Jeep Renegade platform, thus reducing development costs. Therefore, this Italian C-SUV will feature a front-wheel drive and transverse engine, as well as mechanics ranging from the 1.0-liter Firefly engine to the 190 HP 2.0 Mjet engine. In addition to this will be two plug-in hybrid models (PHEV) with Getrag automatic gearbox and a 33 HP electric motor for a total power of 250 HP.

Audi Q4 e-tron

The brand of the four rings entered the electricity market with the e-tron and e-tron Sportback and is now preparing the Q4 range, which will share technology with the Volkswagen ID.4 but taking a step further in the field of luxury and exclusivity.

The Q4 e-tron aims to become a rival of electric models of the compact SUV segment such as the Tesla Model Y, the BMW iX3, or the Mercedes EQC. To do this, this model uses the MEB platform with two electric motors, one for each axle, so it will have an all-wheel drive, a power of 22 kW (300 hp), and an estimated range of up to 550 kilometers in the most complete version. Its launch is estimated for April 2021 and is expected to be marketed from 41,000 euros without promotions.

Audi Q5 Sportback

This sportier variant of the Q5 aims to respond to the rival Mercedes and BMW models: the GLC Coupé and the X4. In this case, the supply of engines will consist of the usual thermal plus a plug-in hybrid variant, extending the road marked by his little brother, the Q3 Sportback.

The new Audi SUV will be available with two diesel engines and two petrol engines. At the time of its launch, it will bring with it a 2.0L TDI engine of 204 HP and 400 Nm of electrified maximum torque with 48-volt light hybrid technology (Mild Hybrid) technology, including Adblue’s dual injection SCR system. It shall be associated with a seven-speed dual-clutch S-tronic automatic gearbox.

After disembarking at the dealerships, new engines will be added to the range. There will be one more version of the four-cylinder TDI, as well as two 2.0 liter TFSI petrol engines, also four-cylinder. Finally, Audi has confirmed that there will be a plug-in hybrid version TFSI e and a sports air version, the new Audi SQ5 Sportback.

Bentley Bentayga LWB

The luxurious SUV of the British brand, which was introduced in 2015 and has been best-selling since then, will feature in 2021 a new long-wheelbase body to add to an offer that currently only includes a 4-liter petrol engine and V8 model that delivers 550 HP of tamed power with the all-wheel-drive system.

Bentayga Speed is only available in a limited number of markets. The release of the variant with greater wheelbase and total length is expected in mid-2021.
