WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A USED TRANSMISSION

Does your car feel like it’s staggering? Do you experience thumps often while driving? Is the problem still persistent after regular servicing of your car? Well in that case, it may be a sign for you to replace your transmission. But first, what is a transmission?

Well, the question has a fairly simple answer. A transmission is what enables you to shift gears in your car while driving. Yup, that’s a pretty important job. In fact, there are two different kinds of transmissions i.e., manual and automatic. Either way it is of utmost importance for you to keep your transmission in check in order to be safe.

However, a troubling transmission does not imply that you need to spend hundreds of dollars in buying an entirely new transmission for your vehicle. There is a much simpler and cost- effective way for you to get an almost brand new like transmission at much more affordable prices which will work just as brilliant as the new one. Yes, you heard that right. Now, you can just replace your old transmission with a high quality and carefully reconditioned used transmission which will make your drives hassle-free and enjoyable as they once were.

Now the question is, what do you need to look for when buying a used transmission.

FLUID

Transmission fluid is what lubricates the different parts in transmission and helps in keeping it cooled off. One must regularly check the transmission fluid in the vehicle, for it is a clear indication of the condition of the transmission. Thus, while purchasing a used transmission, check for the fluid level. If by chance, it is lower than the normal level then this might indicate a previous leak in the transmission.

Also, check the transmission fluid for its color. Transmission fluid in good condition must be clear and reddish-brown in color. If, however, it is dark (blackish) it might point towards negligence with regards to proper maintenance by the previous owner(s).

COMPATIBILITY

Make sure to enquire about the compatibility of the transmission with your vehicle. It is not necessarily important for it to be from the same model, year but it is best to ask your mechanic about the same.

MILEAGE

Mileage is one of the most important factors to look for while buying a used transmission since it indicates you if the purchase is worth your money or not. The lower the mileage on the used transmission, the better it is for your vehicle. However, it is advisable to check in with your mechanic on this issue before buying a used transmission.

PREVIOUS RECORDS

Asking for past maintenance reports and records before purchasing is a smart move. This way you can learn about the performance of the transmission based on the type and regularity of maintenance it received in the past. And it is quite obvious, that a regularly examined transmission will make it a good purchase as compared to the one with irregularity in the past maintenances.

WARRANTIES

One other thing that will benefit you while buying a used transmission is the warranty. Be sure to ask the mechanic/reseller for warranties or extended warranties.

So these are the few things you should keep in mind while buying a used transmission for your car to make sure you get the most out of it.
